CONFIGURE THE MODEL BY MOVING THE SLIDERS ON THE Configure PAGE • Nutrient – sets the initial amount of nutrient in the system. The units are as mgN m -3 ; to convert to units as µM, divide this number by 14 (the molecular weight of N). • Wind – this sets the wind speed. The units are as m s -1 . • Pulse –sets the additional nutrient concentration added to the system to simulate a pollution event. • Pulse time –sets the time of the pulse addition. The unit is day. • Temperature sliders (T@0d .. T@150d) – these set the temperature at a given day. For example, to set the temperature on day 100 at 20°C, drag the slider for T@100d to 20. Temperatures between the set points is assumed to change in a linear fashion. Sliders controlling the microalgae (green) and zooplankton (red) arranged one above the other. • Optimum –set the optimum temperature for growth as °C. • Range – set the temperature range between the lowest temperature for effective growth and the optimum as °C. • Sensitivity –set the sensitivity of the temperature-growth relationship. • Umax –set the maximum growth rate of the organism. The unit is d-1; 0.693 d -1 allows the organism biomass to double each day. The value is attainable at the optimal temperature and assumes sufficient nutrient (for microalgae) or food (for zooplankton).
