Eutrophication One of the most significant impacts of agriculture on oceans is nutrient runoff. Excessive use of fertilisers in conventional farming leads to nitrogen and phosphorus runoff into water bodies, including rivers, and can end up in the ocean. When excess nutrients from agricultural runoff and sewage enter the ocean, they stimulate algal growth, leading to algal blooms.
